Citizens of Helheim, Cerulean here with an update on the spreading Mists that have desecrated our forests, and the rising feeling of unrest that I am sure many of you have been battling with. Helheim has seen bleak times indeed, but now it appears as though the very worst threatens us from the inside. As a fellow, proud member of Helheim’s wondrous populace, I can sympathize with the extremities shown by our Crown in their preparations, and desire to keep us safe. As a Desnan, and as a being who idolizes freedom above all else? I am devastated by the tyrannical displays we have seen, and the utter callous disregard for our people that the Crown has allowed to pass. We now stand on the precipice of dignity, and are faced with a moral dilemma once more. What do we value more, the collective safety of our once noble city as a whole, or the freedoms we are owed from those who rule over us as the common man? The Red Mists have grown worse, there is no denying that. With all three great nations at a standstill, there has been no significant progress as to understanding what caused this most unholy phenomenon, or how we can work as a collective to stop it. Our fellows below ground have seldom been seen above the surface, the proud Empire above the clouds seldom descending from their celestial throne. We, the people of Helheim, are once again in the thick of it all. We cannot find refuge in the clouds, nor are we fortunate enough to find solace below the surface. We, Sincadere’s hardiest and most resolved of people, must endure where the other nations may flee. It is due to this fact that one can sympathize with the drastic measures Princess Tamina has taken in order to protect the city. Yet, it was in the recent destruction of the stature of our once proud king, that has left the people of Helheim in disarray. The former monarch, who’s bloodline was blessed by Mikhail, represented a time in Helheim’s history where it was a city for mankind. Many within Helheim’s walls remember a time where even I, a child of the Fae, would be looked upon with scrutiny. While the purging of xenophobia is something I, and many others, welcome; and yet I can understand how in recent days, there are those who regret ever opening the gates for those of different bloodlines. The Basilica, now subjected to the Crown's direct influence, was adamant in their warnings of a She-Devil sitting upon the throne. In recent days, we see more beings of nefarious lineages openly galavanting in our fair city, and what was once something I am sure many overlooked, has not become a sign of things to come. Will our proud city remain true to its former ideals, or will we see Helheim change into another Amartia? How long will it be before these ‘Emergency measures’ become the norm, and the common man be forced into manual labor at the Crown’s behest?
It does not stop there. Random searches, the appropriation of our resources. . . Elevating Counts and other nobles to be able to speak on the law as if they were Judge and Jury. Just how far will the Crown be permitted to extend its reach under the guise of ‘keeping us safe’? For how long will these policies remain enacted if we are to find a solution. Is this truly the will of a benevolent monarchy, or is this an opportunistic grab for power that Princess Tamina, and Queen Buulzibael go, before the last of our freedoms have been taken from us? Already, word of insurrection has spread from the docks as far as the Middle City, and while I will not openly support such radical decisions. . . I will not condemn them either. Trying times have reached us, and I fear things were simpler when our fears were one we as a people could rally against, but whom do we point the finger at when the enemy is no necrotic hurricane- but our very neighbors, and rulers? The mist itself has overtaken the forests, what was once limited to the outskirts of the Black Tusks now mostly deserted camp, as well as the Swamps between Helheim and the Cabbalan caverns, has now run rampant over the entirety of the woods. Nascentia is not spared in its conquest over the natural world. Helheim, in response to the threat of the mist, has resorted to the construction of a great wall. Further, weeks prior it ran amok over the woods in hopes to ‘stop’ the spread, but with the new laws passed in regards to trade goods, one such controlled by the Crown being lumber, one cannot call themselves astute without asking the questions: Is the Crown working to ‘fight’ the spread of the mist, or ‘capitalize’ on it? I, Cerulean of the Helheim Herald, member of the Basilica; cannot answer this question for you. . . You must find the answers for yourself, and may the Four guide you in doing so. Cerulean here with an update I wished I did not have to give, while I am thrilled to bring you news that is not from our boys-on-the-waves for once, I am dismayed to have to share such troubling tales with those of our great city. The forests weep, and the children of the woods are afflicted. I have taken the time to gather public knowledge on this ‘Red Mist’ that so pervades the woods around our home, and will do my best to translate what we have learned in recent days. Those who are faint of heart, or find themselves more susceptible to woe when it comes to the woods are advised to read no further, or to prepare themselves for the worst. It was only a few weeks ago that the first whispers of this phenomenon were uttered from the Tusks. To those who are not better acquainted with their customs, the prophecy was dismissed. Perhaps it was another form of prank, or perhaps those who still only saw worth in the warnings of Mikhail took the vision granted by the Eye to be little more than heretical nonsense. When I had first heard of the warnings, I assumed it was an interpretive reaction to the practice of Necromancy and other darker forms of magic! The conjoined speculations of me and others outside of the Tusks circle, in the end, were little more than the calm we were afforded before the storm, as any doubts of the legitimacy of the warnings have been silenced. It came just as foretold, a crimson fog that took over the forest. From the outskirts of Tusk territory to the Swamps that border the entrance of the caves, this scarlet film has taken dominion. Plantlife caught within the embrace of this Red Mist decays rapidly, while animals of the land have been reported to undergo horrid transformations. Sprouting extra lips, or donning more heads then they are inherently supposed to possess. The rivers and lakes caught beneath this horrid force possess a rancid smell, both from whatever foul magics are corrupting the surface, and the mass-death of the piscine life within them. Troubling times indeed, my friends. . . As of writing this, none have any concrete ideas as to why these things are happening, or how best to combat them. Nimue, Bah'Jicho of the Tusks, has issued a call for aid. Many have evacuated the Tusk camp, and Nimue has begun to spread news of the dire situation to the other factions. Urging us all to temporarily put former hostilities and past transgressions aside in favor of handling what is undoubtedly the largest threat to our livelihoods in the present. There will be no territorial-wars to wage, or past misdeeds to demand justice for, if all of Sincadere has been subject to the necrosis that this force brings. I for one as your editor have to agree here, and while I am a frequent advocate for peaceful resolution, if there was ever a time for even the most headstrong of us to put their swords to the side- it is now. There are many ways you, our dear readers, can aid the current dilemma. For those who are not keen on risking exposure to the Mist’s, we suggest finding ways of aiding the Tusks during these times. Having been uprooted from their usual home, now more than ever our brothers in Green require your assistance! Offer food, shelter, and clothing if you can. Every little bit helps! Those who are more versed in druidic or Arcane arts are encouraged to venture into the mists and discover what you can. It is advised to bring some form of healer or cleansing spell with you should you endure prolonged exposure, however these are, in all honesty, precautionary measures at best. We as a nation are still not entirely sure how to combat the Mists effects, so travel into them at your own risks. The future may look bleak while we handle these unforeseen occurrences, but we of Helheim are a people who have often stood the test of time, and the trials of tragedy. We have already overcome one prophesied disaster, and this will be no different. When the future looks insurmountable, and you are unsure whether or not we as a city will overcome this, I will bring your attention back to my very first article written as your herald. In the words of our loveable, headstrong Monster hunter: "You don't /get/ tae give up." We will find a way to overcome this blight, we will find a way to heal the addled forest and return the natural world to its splendor, and we will overcome this: Just as we, the people of Helheim, have overcome every other trial Sincadere has thrown at us. ((Those seeking to aid with the ongoing investigation of the Red Mist should, first read the notecard supplied in several points in the forest and then speak to Nimue (Kasia Mae/ minaacedia) IC and OOC to learn more of what they can do to assist!)) Cerulean here with this week's issue of the Helheim Herald! With the successful coronation of our lovely Queen, we are excited for the upcoming stories we get to share with you! Our interviewers are DESPERATELY waiting for the chance to speak to the key figures of the ceremony; but this week we have a special surprise in store. Our boys on the Ocean have been tirelessly working to quell the animosity of the Merpeople, and in doing so have inspired a VERY popular group of artists to grace us with our artistic talents. As a Bard, I had to immediately accept their addition to this week's logistical updates, so without further ado, let’s get into it! From the Fleet, A PROCLAMATION The Royal Navy is proud to announce the establishment of the Fleet, following the successful rebuild of the City of Helheim. The fleets of Her Majesty, The Queen continue to uphold the security of the realm, and abroad. Recent events have spurred contentious relations with the neighboring Mer-folk, leading to several attacks on maritime vessels. The Royal Navy urges citizens to answer the call to duty, and enter into pay, for the preservation of our free, and navigable waterways. Naval-Office, November 3, 2147 A DISPATCH, of which the following is a copy, was received at the Naval Office this day, at Nine o'clock P.M. from Acting Leftenant Maximilian Smith, Officer aboard Her Majesty’s Ship Dormia: Dormia, off Helheim November 2, 2147. I beg leave to acquaint you, that the fleet now established in and around Helheim continue in the pursuit of the security of all navigable waters around the City. The ships and fleets under Commodore Faustus’s command have, with full Vigor and Enthusiasm, taken to sea to seek out and destroy the enemies of free and prosperous trade. It is with the highest level of professional experience and valor that our ships have triumphed over the consistent adversary. The sailors, mariners, and all persons of the fleet continue to stand vigilant over their watch, in service to their country, and in defense of our native shores. As conflict continues with the Mer, and Pirates off Helheim and Nascentia, our ships continue to pursue action, achieving victories in all parts of the hemisphere. The Fleet stands ready to retaliate with unfettered and unrestricted aggression against the Mer responsible for attacks upon Helheim’s merchant and civilian vessels. It is with the greatest urgency that the Royal Navy seeks to discover, and confound the nefarious designs of the enemy, by means of close and unrelenting action at sea, as well as the use of unwavering patrols and blockades, in order to establish a haven for trade and travel within the seas around Helheim, and abroad. I have here included a series of action reports relating to the operations of the Royal Navy, commensurate with our mission. I am, &c. HELHEIM We interrupt your regularly scheduled reports for a special homage to our brave soldiers on the sea; a yet UNRELEASED song written just for the Herald, soon to be performed by the one and only MEATBEATLES! Here is their newest single, “In the Navy!”
The Meatbeatles latest album, "Album Sex Six" is available now! EDITORIAL EXTRAORDINARY: It is with the greatest jubilation that we announce the engagement of one of our own in the fleet, Acting-Leftenant Maximilian Smith with Karliyah Branwynn. Acting-Leftenant Smith of Her Majesty’s Ship Dormia serves as the executive officer of Commodore Faustus Engleton, and has thus served in this capacity for the past two years. He is an up-and-coming officer with great promise, and it is our hope that he continues to find happiness in the service, and new happiness with his newly engaged. The Fleet welcomes Karliyah Branwynn to its family of sailors and mariners, devoted to both country, and family. Ms. Branwynn is known to be a well versed bounty huntress, and has participated in apprehending some of Sincardere’s most wanted, and most dangerous individuals. It is not a surprise that she had caught Acting-Leftenant Smith, being one of the Navy’s most dangerous junior officers. It is then with the deepest of hope that the Fleet wishes the best to Mister Smith, and Karliyah Branwynn as they navigate their way to a bright future. That’s all for this week, but stay tuned as reports from our Navy are rolling in as frequently as the tides! We hope to have a wide variety of stories for you in the upcoming weeks, so if you have any gossip or tales you think the people would want to read, or need to know; please find me in Helheims streets! Commodore Faustus Engleton, A PROCLAMATION It is with great jubilation that it was announced to the fleet, of the APPOINTMENT of Faustus Engleton to the position of Commodore, and Commander of Her Majesty’s Ships and Vessels by Sea. Commodore Faustus Engleton is heralded as the realm’s foremost maritime nautical authority, with decades of experience in sea commerce. Engleton Caravans, Shipwright & Trade, of which Faustus Engleton holds high position, is renowned for its expertise in sailing Sincardere’s seas. As Commodore, Faustus Engleton may continue to contribute his expertise in the service of the Crown. Naval-Office, October 15, 2146 A DISPATCH, of which the following is a copy, was received at the Naval Office this day, at Seven o'clock P.M. from Acting Midshipman Maximilian Smith, Officer aboard Her Majesty’s Ship Dormia: Dormia, off Nascentia, October 12, 2146. SIR, I beg leave to acquaint you, that evacuations continue from the disaster area around the City of Helheim, and that, with the continued and unwavering support of the vessels of Her Majesty’s Navy, the facilitation of the temporary resettlement of its residents is being conducted expeditiously. Throughout this trying time, the sailors and mariners of the Naval Service have demonstrated the highest of professionalism and vigor in their duties to aid their fellow countrymen, and consistently continue to meet, and overcome the challenges provided by both the disaster, and any foreign threats at sea. With the ongoing need to provision the temporary settlement in Nascentia, it has been a priority of the service to ensure that the sea remains free and navigable to vessels of commerce and supply, of which the consistent adversary, being that of pirate outlaws and rogues, seek to confound. However, with the unwavering and skillful attacks of our naval ships, the enemy was thus unable to disrupt the convoys seeking passage through Nascentia. Furthermore, our ships and vessels look to retaliate immediately, with merciless action at sea to quell any threat that so dare unlawfully provoke against fair and honest trade. I have here included a report written by myself, of the action taken place on the tenth of October, commensurate with our endeavors to defeat piracy where it arises. I am, &c. NASCENTIA Action report thereof of the tenth of October, Her Majesty’s Ship, Dormia, off Nascentia 31°15’57” by North, 18°21’38” by East It is of the time of writing that Her Majesty’s Ship Dormia had engaged in action with vessels identified to be pirates operating in the area frequented by convoys bearing provisions and of commerce. I am proud to report that the action was successful, with the pirates having fled, and that no casualties were sustained during the brief exchange of fire. Let me recount, then, the events of the action. The Dormia had been thus tasked with the escort of provisions there and to the temporary settlement in Nascentia, when at approximately nine o’clock, several sails bearing pirate colors bore down upon the rear-most vessels in the convoy, one in particular, the cargo ship Albatross, hoisted her signal of distress which we quickly received aboard the Dormia. The alarm was given, by myself, being at the time, the officer of the watch, to beat to quarters, at which time the crew made hasty preparations to clear for action. I had then made clear my observations to the Captain who had been roused by the alarm. At his command, we then raised our ensign, and prepared to wear ship. Having cleared for action, we approached the axis of battle, where we identified two pirate vessels, one cutter, one gunboat. At the time, the Captain was keen on closing into action, as the pirates held the weather gauge, and wanted to come about as soon as we passed abeam of the enemy vessel. Our eagerness to close into action seemed to have provoked fear in the pirate gunboat, which promptly turned about to flee, with the cutter left to engage us in single action. Command of the gundeck fell to me, and following the order to run out the guns, we fired our warning, putting a shot across the pirate cutter’s bow. Our warning was not heeded, and close action soon followed. I had given instruction to the gunners to aim for the masts, as it was my intention to disable her, so that she may not take advantage of the weather gage, and should we asymmetrically cross the axis of battle to give enfilade fire from our batteries, she would be unable to effectively turn to reply. With our course set, and the battle joined, I, having been ordered by the Captain, commenced firing, the pirate cutter replying in kind, as we exchanged initial broadsides. Fortunately, the fire we received was mostly inaccurate, and ineffective, whereas our gunners performed with exceptional professionalism in properly ranging the target, landing several hits to both the rigging and quarterdeck of the pirate cutter. Following the initial exchange of fire, the captain ordered our ship to come about to the wind, and pursued the continuation of battle with the pirates, however, having received our fire, the pirate cutter, bereft of fighting advantage, made no attempt to continue the engagement, and fled. Not wanting to leave the convoy in pursuit, the Captain ordered the Dormia to return to the formation, and any damage or casualties to be assessed. I am pleased then to report that the crew had acquitted itself most courageously in the face of the enemy, and demonstrated the professionalism of the Helheim Navy. Signed, Maximilian Smith, Acting-Midshipman This day, the tenth of October, 2146. Voren Marwood Rodney Madrigal Renata Ramirez Hello my dear readers! The Helheim Herald is recently undergoing some staff changes, and we are very eager to be able to give our citizens everything ranging from vital changes in our Kingdoms political sphere, regal tales of our fellows accomplishments- and all the juicy gossip you can imagine from the three main factions of Sincadere! But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We have a lot of new and exciting things to share with you!
It would be rude to start without letting you know ‘who’ it is that is acting as a story-teller as you read along! I am Cerulean, a Priest of Desna. I arrived in Sincadere a month or so ago and quickly found myself aligned with the Basilica due to their open acceptance of appropriate faiths and sense of community. As a Desna, there are few things we hold as sacred as friendship and family, so to see such an accepting group of the Faithful coming together to cherish and learn from each of our Gods and Goddesses was something I HAD to be a part of! Sir Ralathos was very inviting, despite my lack of citizenship when I had approached him. Such kindness does not go unnoticed by we Desnans! I am going to do my best to get you the hard facts of everything that occurs, for only the truth may set you free! I am hoping you will all enjoy reading the stories I pursue and the leads I follow as much as I enjoy writing them and meeting all the different personalities that call our lands home. I hope to be able to dive head first in order to get you dear readers the most accurate information as possible! For this week's issue, we are going to focus on some rumors concerning our dear city; as well as the tale of Helheims up-and-coming groups, guilds, and citizens! Upcoming issues will explore the hottest rumors, as well as exclusive interviews with Helheim’s nobility and upper-echelons. If you are looking for a detailed account on any and all issues that pertain to the lovely city of Helheim, look no further than the herald! I had a unique opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with Helheim’s Master of the Hunt; the head of the esteemed clan House MacLeod! When I had first heard of the young huntsman and met him during the night he led us into the Woods to keep the monsters at bay; I was under the impression that the handsome fellow would be quite the stone-cold play boy. The man is quite the daunting figure, clad in a presence you’d have to see for yourself to believe! Yet how did my estimations of the man hold up? Is he indeed the stoic figure we are use to seeing at the head of Helheim’s battles with the darkness, or is there more to him than meets the eye? Well, read for yourself! Our first questions to the young-upstart were simple ones, Who is he? How did he find himself in Helheim; Who exactly are the MacLeod’s and how did they become a reputable family of Monster-Hunters? "Me name is Vigil MacLeod. I am th'last survivin' son and heir o' Clan MacLeod. Fer generations, Clan MacLeod devoted themselves tae th'documentaiton, study and slayin' o' supernatural 'n occult creatures that prey upon mortals." He explained. "I am th'Huntsmaster o' Helheim, as well as th'Chief o' House MacLeod, which is one o' Helheim's unofficial Households." Our dearest Vigil went on to explain that it is possible te MacLeod’s have crossed paths with Helheims borders before, but was unable to confirm if any of his ancestors had also called the city home. Regardless; it is clear that this lineage values honor, responsibility and the safety of those they care about. Unfortunately for our dearest Huntsmaster most of his family's history was tragically lost when he was young. Despite the misfortunes that have occurred, he remained devoted to their teachings and continuing the MacLeod legacy. I have to say; and by the end of this article you will likely agree, Vigil Macleod is quite the noble soul. There are few souls stalwart enough to remain devoted to protecting the meek when faced with so much hardship; This young-man being one of them. As for why he chose Helheim, or rather it chose him if not for a long line of sweat and blood poured into her streets? Well, he gave an answer I as a humble servant of Desna resonated with: "I just sort o'... Well, I just sort o' happened upon Helheim, I suppose. That's th'best way tae describe it." Fate, and whichever god or goddess you believe governs it, has a way of putting you right where you need to be, or in our case where one is most needed. While it may not be the exciting possibility of the MacLeaods having been protecting our city for generations, there is merit in being the first of the bunch. Furthermore, as you are likely aware our Vigil has already taken a hands-on approach to our cities defense not once; but twice now. Hunts he detailed and explained in this very interview! Yet, if they were not an already established clan in Helheims nobility; who were the MacLeods? How did such a unique lineage come to be? Well, luckily for us our Vigil was able to recall his family's history without the primary source accounts! A tale of heartbreak, struggle; and the rejection of divinity. Vigil explained his families saga as follows: "Well, accordin' tae Legend? Th'first MacLeods were part o' th'Tuatha Dé Danann, which translates roughly tae "Folk o' th'Goddess Danu". Th'story goes that one such individual fell in love with a mortal, howe'er said mortal was slain by Barghest. Thus this Tuatha Dé, in his grief, opted tae live among th'mortals. Th'last words they muttered before leavin' th'Otherworld is our clan's motto." He breathed in. "Gu bràth a' sealg na h-oidhche. Fore'er Huntin' th'Night." He paused for a moment longer, before shrugging. "This is just legend, though. Th'more likely story is that monsters kept on causin' grief fer villages. Lycanthropes would attack travellers, trolls would eat livestock, demons would bring havoc and chaos... /Someone/ had tae t ake up th'responsibility o' protectin' those who couldn't protect themselves. Thus me family swore tae do so." There you have it folks! The tragic tale of resolve and hardship that brought this paradoxical figure to Helheim. Who’d have thought a long line of apparent mortals could potentially have connections to such a legendary figure, as well as shouldering an age-old vendetta against the worst of the worst that stalk Sincadere. I don’t know about you, but I feel much more confident in our cities chances of thwarting the Creatures of the Night with such a committed man leading our efforts from the front lines. How does our man do it, you wonder? Well, he gave us quite an inspiring explanation. "We're Humans. Whot we lack in supernatural abilities, we make up fer in grim determination and resolve." Unless you live under a rock (Looking at you, Cabbalans!) You would have heard of Vigils recent exploits. Going head-to-head with the nefarious members of the Crimson Fang, as well as hunting one of the most sinister creatures one can encounter along the dark woods; a Wendigo! How did our Vigil fair against these threats, and which left a bitter taste in his mouth? The answer was given from a point of reason that dismissed any preconceptions I had of this man being a cold-hearted brute who simply took joy in the hunt. "... I /believe/, that ultimately? Th'Wendigo was th'greater threat as opposed tae th'Crimson Fang. Y'see--- Th'Crimson Fang, while formidable and numerous? They can be reasoned with tae a degree. They have loved ones--- Or th'closest thing their ilk has tae love. They have individual goals, aspirations, desires that go beyond eating, fucking and killing.... But that Wendigo?" He gave a firm exhale. "It was a creature without allegiance. A beast that was driven by naught but ravenous hunger alone. If we had failed tae stop it, it would move on tae th'next kingdom, and th'next. Th'Wendigo was a threat tae Sincadere as a whole, while th'Crimson Fang cared more fer those that wandered th'Forests alone." I know for some it is all too easy to forget our rivals beneath the ground are living beings with emotion, compassion; and even fears. Despite what some of our more Zealous comrades claim, the Cabbalans are not all unthinking brutes. They can show mercy, or even restraint if given the chance to prove even they possess a bit of light. A creature such as the one who terrorized the woods without reason? Not so much. While I am sure there are others who share my pity in the potential humanity that was consumed by the creatures metamorphosis; such a threat could not be left to continue in its wanton destruction. If you learn anything from this week's issue, I hope you can learn to appreciate your fellows; as Sincadere has proven time and time again that even the most loved or kind-hearted souls can fall to malevolence under unfortunate circumstance. While the young Huntmaster was unable to salvage that humanity, even he was able to choose a less definite end for the poor soul. How you may ask? "Wendigo are created when a Human is driven tae a point o' starvation, where they are forced tae eat th'flesh o' their fellow man. A Wendigo's spirit possesses them, 'n turns 'em in tae a ruthless beast.... It is possible tae imprison those spirits though, which I was mercifully able tae do." Not only is our Vigil a skilled tacker and foe of the dark, but a man who possesses the know-how and empathy to not lose himself in the moment. Able to choose the potential of salvation over the slaughter of a potentially salvageable soul, this was another point in the interview where one can see that Humanity is a fire burning bright in MacLeod’s soul. It’s not wonder that he has gotten to where he is, and is able to stare into the abyss without losing himself to madness. Yet not all possess the skills or drive that Vigil has honed. One man cannot defend us all, so how does the Huntsmaster plan to ensure all who may not be so fortunate as to have him save them in their moment of need have a fighting chance? Well, our dear Huntmaster is aiming to give training to all who are willing, as well as actively recruiting new members to the MacLeod Hunting Party. "Me plans are tae host lessons fer Helheim's populace. Educate them on how tae best handle supernatural threats. TH'more folk arei nformed, th'easier it will be fer us as a kingdom tae deal with that which would prey upon mortals." I for one am eager to learn under Vigil’s tutelage. Not only to better my own chances of survival, but to see how such a skilled warrior fairs in a more personable setting. Fighting beasts is grim enough; but teaching those without experience to be able not to freeze when the time comes? While it may seem daunting, I am confident Vigil will take the steps necessary to ensure that we as a city are not only equipped with the knowledge needed to defend who and what we hold dear; but to possess even a fraction of his nerves when staring the most grim of eyes face-to-face. We spent a lot of time speaking on the facts and tactical knowledge the man possesses, but surely such a specimen has more going on than just his war with darkness. Who is he outside of his profession, and what bonds has the man forged while living amongst us? We at the Helheim even had the chance to learn more about his personal life. If you are curious to know what Guilds you can expect to see Vigil assisting, or if you have a chance of snagging the young bachelor for yourself; then don’t put this article down! The Herald has the answers you seek! When asked what groups Vigil stands behind, I was pleasantly surprised to see all the big names; "Th'Shadows o' Helheim, th'Basilica, and th'Black Tusks?" He asked. "Those three guilds, and th'men in charge o' them, are admirable. I would fully endorse them. Granted, th'Tusks can be a bit rowdy. Their customs might come across as outlandish. But..." He cracked a grin. "All three o' those guilds, and th'men leadin' t hem, act in th'interest o' Helheim. They've th'support o' House MacLeod in all their endeavors, fer as long as they continue tae put Helheim first." If you needed further proof that our Vigil is able to distnguish “evil” and “non-human” then those of my brothers and sisters who call the Tusks home can put their worries to rest! With such a kind endorsement, Vigil has once again proved himself not only able; but caring towards all who call Helheim home. Yet I know there are readers who have patiently waited to see if our Vigil is single and ready to mingle, however I would caution those who expect the mans heart to be of stone to take a closer look. I for one had went into this expecting to meet quite the charmer with a varied number of partners amongst his burly arms, and yet the truth was perhaps more heartbreaking than his own clans history. I warn those who read on to have a handkerchief ready, as this is sure to rattle your heartstrings! Vigil fell silent, his expression turning to one of shock. His face actually seemed to go pale. Gradually, however, that expression of his went from shock, to one of sorrow. "... There are. Though they don't wait fer me. I wait fer them tae return." He admitted softly, as he came to cradle his left arm. ".... There are two women who I love above all else. THose bein' me then-Wife, Nora MacLeod, as well as Tsuiteru Akira, me partner.... And aye--- I am aware, havin' two lovers is a bit o' a tabboo. But I can explain." He breathed in softly. "Nora... Me beloved Nora. I met her years back. WE travelled taegether, huntin' that which lurked in th'dark. There came a time where I was forced tae cut off me left arm in order tae save her. E'en now I would do so in a heart beat. She was actually carryin' our child in her womb when we arrived here. But.... Circumstances beyond out control forced her tae leave Sincadere." He paused. "And Akira.... TH'daughter o' Derizael and Tsuiteru. She, she made me feel loved again. [13:45] Vigil MacLeod: She supported me. Brought out th'best in me. But her father--- TH'Emperor o' th'Jade Lotus Empire, refused tae approve o' our relationship. Fer I am but a Mortal, and she was a Dragon. I would die in due time, leavin' her with no one. Like Nora, she had tae leave Sincadere fer reasons beyond our control." He fell silent for a few moments longer, coming to look at the ground. ".... I long fer their return. I genuinely do. But more than that? Beyond seein' them again? Whot I want most is fer those two women tae be happy, where'er they may be..." Who’d have thought that a man who seems to take the hardships of battle right on the chin could carry such an open, yet battered heart on his sleeve? While I originally wanted to follow this question up with his thoughts on the Cabbala and the Jade Lotus, I believe this painted a rather clear picture. Sure, the Cabbalans prove a constant nuisance toward both factions; but only one has directly denied the most wondrous of human emotions. While I may be mistaken in this assumption, I am willing to bet Vigil has more sympathy for those who act in accordance with their nature than one so cruel as to deny the prospect of true love. Those who wish to court our Huntsmaster take note; There is a soft interior hidden beneath that grim visage! I couldn’t help but ask; and somewhat regretted it as well, due to how quickly this upbeat discussion left me mourning the mans troubled life; What is up with the eyepatch? Was it robbed of him from some grand hunt with a nemesis, or perhaps hides an arcane secret that grants the otherwise human vessel his prowess? If you thought our poor Huntsmasters love-life was rough, Batter down the hatches! This next story is quite the grim one, yet I believe further shows just how suited our boy is for his line of work, and will quell any doubts one may have on his tenacity. "... I was a boy when I lost everythin'. A boy o' eleven years old, when a great host o' Demons marched upon Glenkirk. On that night, I saw everythin' I cared fer put tae th'sword, 'n burned tae ashes. I, and some other children, were taken as captives. Tae be broken down mentally 'n used tae summon a greater Demon." He sucked in a gentle breath. "Me Gaoler was especially cruel, y'know. Took great delight in torturin' me. At one point, such torture came in th'form o' a thin blade bein' put through me eye. Not deep enough tae slay me, naw. But enough tae cause me unspeakable agony." He came to touch at his eyepatch. "... They broke me, a'ight. But not in th'way they wanted. They wanted me tae become catatonic with fear. But as that year o' torture continued, all I felt was rage. Sheer rage, tae those who took me world from me. I was twelve years old when I slew me Gaoler. I lured him in tae me cell, and when he leaned down tae see if I was alive? I lunged fer him. ME teeth found his throat. I tore his windpipe out." It’s important to remember that in a world of Werebeasts, Wendigos, and sinister beings of other realms; that sometimes the most dangerous and wicked of souls are human. Who’d have guessed of all the species and opponents our Huntsmaster has thwarted, it would have been his fellow man who left the greatest scar? For those of you who fear how this impacts his emotions, or that this week's article is going to leave you with a bitter taste stuck upon your lips; Raise your chins up high! For our Vigil has a word or two to tell you, and those who fear the future to come: "You don't /get/ tae give up." He allowed those words to linger in the air for a time. "Givin' up? Curlin' up and just dyin' when all is lost? Y'don't /get/ tae do that. And I will tell ya why; Because there are those around love ya fiercely. Whether they are here in th'present, back in th'past, or no longer among th'livin'? There are individuals who depend upon ya. Who love ya above all else. Tae simply give up, is th'greatest betrayal o' their trust. Th'greatest insult tae their investment in ya." He stood himself up straight, holding his head up high. "It isn't gonnae be easy. It is /ne'er/ easy. There will be pain. Physical. Mental. Emotional. Y'will have nights where yer lookin' down at yer knife, with th'idea o' openin' up yer own throat will become more and more appealin'. And at th'desicive moment? At yer [14:09] Vigil MacLeod: absolute lowest? Y'will remember those dear tae ya. Y'will remember how they made all yer grief, and pain, have /meanin'/ through th'happiness and joy you've experienced with 'em." He remained silent for a moment longer, before finally concluding. "WIthout pain, joy is meanin'less. So endure that pain. Endure th'absolute /worse/ that life can throw at ya. Because that is how you come tae appreciate th'good that life has tae offer." Sometimes it’s a firm hand we need, most times it is tough love that gets through where kind-hearted words or white lies fail. So, for my dear readers who struggle in the face of darkness, and those who wonder how one can ever face such horrors and move forward? Vigil has given you your clear answer. Life is a package deal, and for every storm there must be a rainbow. While times may look grim, and the future of Helheim remains uncertain, we must persevere. May the winds always blow favorably upon you, and may Desna and the Four continue to smile upon us all! Action report 17-JUL:
I beg leave, here, to acquaint you, that upon the seventeenth of July, His Majesty’s Ship Avalon was engaged in action against a great creature of unfathomable destruction. I am proud to report that the crew aboard acquitted themselves most courageously in the face of the adversary, and preserved the good name of the Naval Service. Let me then recount the events of the day’s action. Having arrived at the location of which had been predetermined for our voyage, and the special compliment having departed for their mission, Captain Ralathos, in his good mind, ordered us to clear for action, so that we may have an hour’s exercise at the guns. He thought it prudent that the crew was well prepared, and the guns run out, in case it were needed that we should provide support for the special compliment. Having beat to quarters, and concluding the exercise, we were beset upon by a large beast, bearing many tentacles, much akin to the legendary kraken. Having the good fortune of being already cleared for action, we made good time in replying to the threat. The good Captain Ralathos, having been preoccupied with the command of other persons of the special contingent, to the defense of the ship, the honor then fell to me to command the general crew, and battery of guns. The beast closed a-midships, intending to carry the action by means of assault. Several initial attacks were warded off by the special contingent, whilst the marine detachment, at my request, began opening fire with their firelocks from the quarterdeck and tops. The beast however did not relent, and so at the Captain ordered us to deliver our broadside. With the ship’s batteries at my command, we then laid into the beast with our larboard guns, our twelve and twenty four pounders being used to great effect in repelling the beast. I personally took it upon myself to bring to bear, the forty-two pounder carronades of the Forecastle battery. The action then lasted two hours, upon which the beast was eventually slain, and the carcass taken as a prize. The action having concluded, and at Captain Ralathos’s orders, we made sail for port, our main mast having been destroyed, having being cut loose in the action, and in desperate need of repairs. I beg permission to bring to the attention of my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, the conduct of the undermentioned Men, who showed themselves in such a way to bring great success to the action of 17 July, of which valor had been personally witnessed by my person. It should be noted Asteri did well acquit himself in the action, by leaping upon the beast, to better deliver injury. His action displayed valor, and commitment to his duty, above and beyond what shall be expected of a sailor or mariner. Furthermore, I could not in good conscience fail to convey the bravery and resolve of Karliyah Branwynn, who having lost her hat, did not lose her head, and continued to deliver fatal blows to the beast. It was witnessed that she did many times, despite injury to her person, continued to ward off the beasts attacks, and saved the lives of many sailors and mariners aboard through the vaillant defense of her station. It shall here also be noted the actions of Ada and Korin, to which the pair did bravely engage the beast, and which no other pair that I can recount, is able to fight so well together. Their pursuit of slaying the beast ultimately lended to the success of the action. The prime minister who was also present at the action demonstrated her resolve to uphold not only her civic duty, but also her duty to her fellow countrymen, and took up arms in defense of the latter. As well as the others of the special contingent that are not mentioned in this report. It should not be neglected to explain that those not personally mentioned did equally execute their duties with bravery and personal courage, and it is my regret that I do not have the time to mention every instance of heroism. I write this report in the belief that both the good Captain Ralathos, and I are of the same mind on the events of the action, and through the Strict and Unwavering commitment of the sailors and mariners, and actions fought by His Majesty’s Ship Avalon, and the men and women of her company, the seas of Nascentina can again be considered a haven for all shipping whom fly the Colours of His Majesty. - Colonel Iolanthus Aqentre P.S. I beg your pardon for the formatting of this report, as it is being written aboard Avalon, whilst underway, and delivered via mail ship to hasten its arrival. Editorial Review of Jakova Reese’s 'How the Other Cats Live'
Gritty. Emotional. And a sincere call to action, Jakova Reese’s newest work gives us a deep dive into the highly stratified realm of the Jade Lotus Hierarchy. Using new picture technology (with mild magical edits) this tour de force work depicts the plight of the Nekoyami people in a palpable genuineness never captured before. This work contrasts the duality of the Jade system. Like a gilded coin, the golden exterior of lavish Jade opulence is mitigated by an undercurrent of brutal systematic oppression predicated upon race. With these visceral photo-realistic representations, you’ll be left at the edge of your seat readying for a call to action against the savage behavior of the Jade power brokers. Grade: A+ Please stay tuned, this is a multi-part series that will deliver an expose that will leave you the viewers speechless! The Helheim Herald is pleased to present the musical styling of Guardsman Maximilian Smith. ((Click on this link and press "P" to play the music or read the lyrics below)). On the 18th day of March,
Under the midday sun, We had formed the line for action, mi boys At four o'clock begun! Brave Aurora to the fleet did say, The gods shall prosper us this day, Give them the broadside, fire away! On board a man-o-war. From broadside to broadside, The cannonballs did fly. Like hailstones the small-shot, Around the decks did lie. Both mast and riggings were shot away, Along with many on that day, Who had fell or were wounded in the fray, On board a man-o-war. Our soldiers and sailors, Many noble deeds have done, While fighting in the foreign, Many battles they have won. May heroes of old bear witness there, And all of history declare, There is none with Aurora can compare, On board a man-o-war. On Jan 22nd, 2022, the King of Helheim hosted what is reputed to become a quarterly carnival!
((Above picture drawn by Kyosumari)) The Queen's mother, Aigie, made an appearance. Aigie is best known for her role as Headmistress of the Cabbala College of Obscure Arts. She's pictured above with Helheim's Queen Laya, the image captured by something called 'science'. For the most part the event went smoothly, with well over 70 in attendance at peak time, however several people reported they were light coin and suggested some pick pockets might have been operating throughout the day. A fight broke out by the Yisu and Mick booth between the not-so-happily-married couple which resulted in the Nekoyami moving her goods to another booth.
Watch for updates on the next carnival! |
